A very devious daredevil Computer Technician had Facebook’s flaw exposed with the help of The Associated Press.
There was a security lapse in the Facebook system that allowed unwanted strangers to view personal photos that were posted in Facebook Inc’s popular online hangout in contradiction to the said social network’s recent update of new features of privacy controls.
The secrutiy lapse enabled the stanger to gain access to private photos including those of co-founder Mark Zuckerberg himself.
The name of the Computer technician that spilled and tipped about the news to The Associated Press was Byron Ng from Vancouver, Canada.
Ng had been tripping on finding security weakness of Facebook just last week then Facebook had just announced new and better ways to restrict access to personal profiles. Making the added security features not enough from preventing Ng to going inside and viewing most recent pictures posted by Facebook members and their contacts.
After the said incident a spokes woman Brandee Barker from Facebook said that the Palo Alto-based company fixed the cause of the laps within an hour’s time.
“We take privacy very seriously and continue to make enhancements to the site,” Barker said.
The recent lapse serves as another warning and threat of putting private or sensitive photos online, personal information and so on, even as sites have been claiming that they can shield such information from prying eyes.
With a few coding tricks on Ng’s sleeves, Ng was able to access Paris Hilton’s private pictures at the Emmy awards and a picture of her brother drinking beer with friends and pictures of other people that was not allowing Ng for profile access. Ng was able to take snap shots of the personal sites that he had accessed even of those photos of people that were supposed to have been invisible to strangers like Ng.
Some members of social networks such of that as Facebook has the practice of posting pictures of themselves of embarrassing situations that even include the use of illegal drugs that can cause trouble. However, none of photos that had been viewed by Ng fall in to category.
Risk or not, more and more people and most are teenagers, take the time to post personal photos in their personal accounts and more intimate and private details about them over the internet.
New’s Corp’s MySpace.com was one of the most recent on online security lapse that is larger than Facebook causing access to their member’s private photos. The expose’ had been reported early in this year.
